Internet Safety: What is a Woogi?

Prior to becoming a technology resource teacher years ago, I attended a very scary and disturbing internet safety workshop.  I learned just how prevalent and underhanded internet predators can be.  I came away with a healthy fear of the internet for my children and students.

I learned simple steps that families can take to reduce the risks involved with children using the internet, which, of course, has many, many amazing benefits as well.  For instance, NEVER allow your child to have a computer with internet access in their bedrooms; keep the internet in a common room.  Set and use PARENTAL CONTROLS.  ALWAYS know your children’s passwords and frequently check on their account activity.  Peruse their email and chat history, scanning for unfamiliar and suspicious correspondences. It may seem like an “invasion”, but that is our job as parents — safety must always come first.  Of course, the most important piece is to EDUCATE our children about the dangers and safe practices.

This evening, I stumbled across a great site — Woogi World.  This site, disguised as an online game site, is designed to teach and reinforce safe use of the internet.  It addresses multiple topics within the realm of safe internet use.  For instance, in addition to lessons on topics like which questions are safe/unsafe to answer, it also emphasizes maintaining a healthy balance in life – how much is too much?

I highly recommend you check this site out.  Making it easier for parents to understand, they’ve even included a short video overview of the site and activities.
