Living Readers: Part 1

Last Friday, Camp Nash hosted the first in a series of guest reader visits this year.

In an effort to model and share the habits of good readers, I’ve arranged for many familiar faces, and some, perhaps, not so familiar, to come share their lives as readers with us.  We’ll hear about what these readers like to read, when they read, where and how they find books to read, and any other special habits or “rituals” they may have.

Our first visitor, Mrs. Holtsman, also shared with us one of her children’s books, Kamishabi Man by Allen Say, a warm story about a retired Japanese storyteller remembering long ago days.

I hope you enjoy watching this video of our special guest.  I’m looking forward to sharing more with you soon!

Becoming Good Readers: Finding Time to Read

I’m busy.  Are you busy?  Even the best of readers are busy people.  We all have practice/games/classes to attend, chores to do, errands to run, homework to complete, meals to prepare, and bedtimes to which we must stick!  In our busy lives, it can be hard to find time to sit down and read!

On Friday, we discussed how and when we could find time to read OUTSIDE of Readers’ Workshop.  Here are a few ideas we came up with in class.

  • While parents are cooking, preparing, or “fetching” dinner
  • When others are watching TV
  • Before bed
  • At Extended Day
  • While brothers and sisters are at practice, dance class, gymnastics, etc.
  • Before karate (while you’re waiting for class to begin)
  • During “showerama” (while others at home are bathing/showering and you’re waiting your turn)
  • While parents are reading together
  • At home in the morning
  • Before school in the hall (STAR time)
  • At the doctor’s/dentist’s/orthodontist’s office
  • While your doing something else (i.e. reading about a game while you’re playing it, reading a recipe while you’re cooking)
  • In the car
  • On trips or vacations
  • With our brothers, sisters, and friends
  • At slumber parties

I challenged student readers to come up with other great opportunities for reading to help us all find time to read!  As you find time to read, be sure to comment on this post to share with us when and where you carved out time for reading!

Readers, READ!
